The couple recalled thinking, “something bad has happened to one of our parents”

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos celebrated their 2025 Daytime Emmy win for Outstanding Daytime Talk Series on Monday, Oct. 20, kicking off Live with Kelly and Mark with their brand new statue in hand.

But the couple were less enthusiastic over the weekend, when they learned of their win.

Recalling what happened, Ripa explained that she and Consuelos were not present at the 2025 Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony in Pasadena, California, and instead were “sound asleep” in their New York City apartment.

“We had a lot going on. Friday was a very, very busy day,” said Ripa. “And we went to bed early — I was asleep by 8:45 p.m. and I think [Mark] was probably out by 9 p.m.”

They didn’t make it through the night, however. Hours into their snooze, their dog, Lena, woke them up, “because she hadn’t been out for her night pee.”

That’s when Ripa and Consuelos grabbed their phones “to illuminate the room,” and saw they had received “70 text messages.”

The notifications immediately caused the pair to panic. “To us, [that] means that something bad has happened to one of our parents,” Ripa said. “So we are, of course, terrified to click.”

Consuelos’ fears calmed first, as he noticed that the messages had come from their coworkers. But on Ripa’s phone, all she saw was her latest message. And it happened to be from her 22-year-old son, Joaquin.

“I was like, ‘Oh no, something bad has happened,’ ” Ripa said.

Turns out, Joaquin was just asking his mom “to send him a picture of him with long, curly hair,” Ripa joked. “And then [Mark] said, ‘Hey, we won an Emmy!’ “

That made sense to Ripa. In 2024, the same thing happened when she and Consuelos won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host.

“We only win Emmys when we’re asleep!,” Ripa joked. “Last year, we were sound asleep and we won an Emmy. So this is proof that we need to be put to bed on Emmy night. We need to be put to sleep if we are going to win.

This is only the second time Live has ever been named Outstanding Daytime Talk Series. The syndicate show, which is TV’s No. 1 entertainment talk series, previously won the category in 2012. It has been nominated 21 times.

Other nominees for the award this year included The View, The Drew Barrymore Show, The Jennifer Hudson Show and The Kelly Clarkson Show.

“Thank you very much, people in the academy,” Ripa said on Monday’s episode. “We really appreciate it.”

“This show is a labor of love. We do it with a very small, tiny group of people,” Ripa said. “It’s a true honor, but we couldn’t do it without our group and our incredible audience. Our show does not typically win the Emmy for best show, but I will say, you guys give us the Emmy every day. You are, I will repeat, our good luck charm.”
