Jeff Bezos’ mother Jackie Bezos died Aug. 14 at age 78 following a battle with dementia, weeks after the Amazon founder and his wife Lauren Sánchez Bezos got married in Venice, Italy.

Jeff Bezos and his family are mourning a major loss.

Just weeks after the Amazon founder tied the knot with Lauren Sánchez Bezos in Italy, the Bezos Family Foundation shared the sad news that Jeff’s mother Jackie Bezos died peacefully in her Miami home on Aug 14. She was 78.

Her cause of death was listed as a five-year battle with Lewy Body Dementia, a progressive brain disorder.

The foundation described her last years as “a quiet final chapter to a life that taught all of us, friends and family alike, the true meaning of grit and determination, kindness, and service to others.”

Jeff, 61, also spoke out with a personal message honoring his mother, who had him when she and husband Ted Jorgensen were teenagers in New Mexico.

“Her adulthood started a little bit early when she became my mom at the tender age of 17,” the Amazon founder wrote on Instagram Aug. 14. “That couldn’t have been easy, but she made it all work. She pounced on the job of loving me with ferocity, brought my amazing dad onto the team a few years later, and then added my sister and brother to her list of people to love, guard, and nourish.”

Jeff—whose parents divorced when he was a baby—said that the list of her loved ones “never stopped growing” for the rest of her life.

“She always gave so much more than she ever asked for,” he continued, “After a long fight with Lewy Body Dementia, she passed away today, surrounded by so many of us who loved her—her kids, grandkids, and my dad. I know she felt our love in those final moments. We were all so lucky to be in her life. I hold her safe in my heart forever.”

Following her split with Ted, Jackie went on to get married to her husband Miguel “Mike” Bezos and welcome children Mark and Christina, with her role as a mom inspiring her charity work.

“Jackie’s experiences as a mother and student shaped some of her life’s most important work,” the foundation wrote. “Jackie’s desire to help improve life for others extended well beyond the Foundation, and included large-scale charitable projects focused on medical research and community healthcare.”

And of course, she put everything she had into her family—including making “countless trips to Radio Shack” for the eventual CEO.

“Jackie’s life of service was second only to her passion for family and gathering,” the post continued. “As a grandmother, Jackie found immense joy in watching her family grow. She passed down not only traditions and stories, but also her values—kindness, resilience, and the importance of togetherness.”

Amid the loss, Lauren Sánchez Bezos showed her support for her husband, sharing Bezos Scholars’ post about Jackie to her own Instagram Story with a broken heart emoji.

Many others also shared their love and fond memories of Jackie, including those who knew her personally.

One Instagram user commented on the Bezos Scholars Aug. 14 post, “Jackie saw something in me that helped me believe more in myself. Her single mother story resembled my moms. She truly changed my life. Since I met her, I have carried her love, joy, compassion, and belief like a sacred flame in my heart. I will continue to do so now with renewed humility, adoration, and spirit.”

Another who worked alongside her shared the same.

“I’m so honored I got to work with Jackie on the Bezos Scholars program and stay in touch with her and Mike,” they wrote in the comments. “The Universe is a better place for having had her in it.”
