9 Details About the Time Winona Ryder Robbed a Clothing Store
In the 90’s Winona Ryder was an actress who did not stop reaping success.
But her beauty and talent were overshadowed when in 2001 she starred in a robbery of a luxury clothing store. Here’s what happened:
1. Winona Ryder was caught stealing $5,560 worth of merchandise

On December 12, 2001, Winona Ryder was caught stealing a sweater, hair accessories, and several socks from the luxury store ‘Saks Fith Avenue’.
The amount of stolen items totaled $5,560 and people were impressed, because it was money that Winona could easily afford.

2. It wasn’t the first time Winona robbed the store

According to the store’s lawyer, it was not the first time that Winona had been caught stealing by security cameras.
The owners didn’t know how to react, due to Winona’s celebrity status, but when robberies became commonplace, they decided to put a stop to it.
3. Winona never used what she stole from the store

Winona’s lawyer stressed that his client had never worn the clothes that had been stolen from the store, arguing that he did so because of a psychological condition.
The psychologists said that Winona was a kleptomaniac and did not steal out of the desire to get things, but because of the euphoria that the theft caused.

4. A doctor had prescribed a cocktail of potent drugs

Among Winona’s belongings, the police found different anxiolytics, sedatives and antiepileptics that Winona took daily.
These drugs had been illegally taken by Dr. Jules Mark Lusman, who was known for selling prescription drugs to celebrities.

5. The opposing lawyer almost drove Winona out of her boxes in the middle of the trial

Just before the trial began, Winona had made a donation of $200,000 to the family of a girl from her hometown, who had been as3s1nada.
The store’s lawyer said Winona was taking advantage of a girl’s death, so that the world would see her as a “good woman” and not a thief.
Winona was so surprised, that she stood up in the middle of the trial.

6. She was sentenced to 480 hours of community service

The store’s lawyers made it clear that their intention was not for Winona to go to prison, but for her to be held accountable for her actions.
The judge sentenced her to 480 hours of community service, $3,700 in fines, and paying for what she had stolen from the store.

7. A store got rich selling t-shirts that said, “Free Winona”

A Los Angeles gift shop took advantage of the situation and quickly patented the “Free Winona” T-shirts.
Owner Billy Tsangares confessed that his shirts were a success and sold hundreds of them.
8. Years later she became a model for one of the brands she stole

In 2001 Winona had stolen a sweater from the Marc Jacobs Beauty brand.
In 2016 Winona became the spokesperson for the brand and a close friend of the designer. What an irony!
9. Winona Ryder didn’t get a role for years

After this scandal, Winona simply decided to disappear from Hollywood.
The first role she got after the scandal was in the film “Black Swan” and she currently seems to have resumed her career.
