A woman blamed illness for her absence at her sister’s wedding over the weekend, but the truth was a different story.

In a post on Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum, the bride’s sister asked users on the popular platform whether or not she was in the wrong for lying about why she skipped the wedding. The day before the ceremony, the woman claimed to be sick with COVID-19 when in actuality she was healthy and preparing for an out-of-state job interview.

“On the day of her wedding, I had a very high profile job interview in another state and when I asked if I could reschedule, they said unfortunately they couldn’t and I would lose out if I couldn’t make it,” the woman explained. “I know this sounds crazy to miss someone’s wedding for, but this was a huge career opportunity for me and would change my life.”

The job-seeker decided to prioritize her big interview over her sister’s special day because she and her sister “are not close.” The woman, 24, and the bride, 36, are 12 years apart. They didn’t speak for much of the time when the poster was in high school and the bride was living her adult life, and only “reconnected over a few long phone calls this summer.”

Rather than tell the bride the truth, the poster decided to lie because she didn’t want to “jinx” her chance of getting hired. She also didn’t want to risk the bride spilling the news to other wedding attendees who might ask where she was.

“I know it sounds silly, but I just didn’t want any potential negativity right before a huge event for me,” she said.

The woman did, however, disclose the job interview to her aunt.

“My aunt said she would keep it to herself but that I should give my sister a brief explanation without giving out any details,” she wrote. “But I didn’t.”

Although the bride’s sister knows it was “wrong” of her, she told the bride “a day beforehand that [she] had a fever and was diagnosed with Covid.” The bride “was upset, but understood.”

The poster’s aunt told her she was “a bad person and an a—— for lying.”

“On one hand I understand it’s of course wrong to lie, but on the other hand, it’s ultimately my business and it’s not that wrong to tell a (in my opinion) harmless lie to save myself from a lot of questioning from people I am not close with,” the bride’s sister said.

Fellow Reddit users asked the poster whether or not she was hired, but there’s still no answer.

A few Redditors said that if the woman got the job, then maybe it was worth skipping the wedding. The majority of users, however, argued it wasn’t okay to miss such a major life event for job interview. They added that it was “s—–” to lie, and put the aunt in an “awkward position where she now has to lie too.”

“It absolutely wasn’t worth skipping a once-in-a-lifetime family wedding,” one of the top comment reads. “I can’t imagine missing a family member’s wedding for anything.”

Commenters also shamed the prospective employer for not rescheduling the interview.

“I can’t imagine a prospective employer not being willing to reschedule an interview for a family wedding. Who would want to work for a company like that?” one person wrote.
