Just weeks before Hollywood would be shaken by tragedy, acclaimed cinematographer Barry Marowitz spent five nights as a guest in the Brentwood home of legendary filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michelle Singer Reiner. What he saw—and what he didn’t—now haunts everyone who loved the family.

Marowitz, whose credits include Sling Blade, Crazy Heart, and Being Charlie (the semi-autobiographical film co-written by Nick Reiner and directed by his father), is no casual acquaintance. He’s a close friend, a collaborator, and someone who’s shared both creative and personal moments with the Reiners for years. When he describes his November 2025 visit, the word he uses is “love fest.”

“I slept in the same house as Nick. There was never a thought, I believe, in Rob’s head that Nick was a danger,” Marowitz told Page Six. “L-O-V-E is the only thing I saw.”

A Portrait of Family Life

During those five days, Marowitz joined the Reiners for family dinners, basketball games, and quiet evenings watching movies. The household, he recalls, was filled with warmth and laughter. Romy, Rob and Michelle’s daughter, would come and go, joining for meals. The house buzzed with activity—work, help coming in and out, business as usual.

Nick, the Reiners’ 32-year-old son, was present, active, and seemingly on the upswing. He played tennis, shot hoops, helped with chores, and talked openly with the family. Marowitz described him as looking “like a GQ model,” gentle and pure of soul. Even with Nick’s well-documented history of addiction—17 rehab stays by age 30—there were no signs of violence or instability.

A Troubled Past, a Family That Never Quit

Nick Reiner’s struggles with addiction began at 15. He’s spoken publicly about periods of homelessness, failed treatments, and the relentless power of drugs. “I am a spoiled white rich kid from a Hollywood family,” he told NPR in 2016, “but I think it’s even more of a testament to how powerful drugs can be that you don’t care about any of that stuff.”

Rob and Michelle never abandoned their son. They sent him to top-tier treatment centers, wilderness camps, and therapists. “They tried a million things with him,” Marowitz said. Not money, but every resource and ounce of love they could muster.

Their pain—and hope—became art in 2015’s Being Charlie, a film that explored the fractured relationship between a young man and his famous father. Rob called it “the most personal thing I’ve ever done.” In interviews, both parents admitted their regrets: “We listened to the people with diplomas on their walls when we should have been listening to our son,” Rob said. Michelle echoed, “We were so influenced by these people. They would tell us he’s a liar… and we believed them.”

A Night at Conan’s, and the Days That Followed

On December 13th, 2025, the Reiners attended a Christmas party at Conan O’Brien’s home, bringing Nick along to keep an eye on him. Multiple guests described Nick as out of place—wearing a hoodie, interrupting conversations, and asking people if they were famous. At some point, voices rose between Rob and Nick in a heated argument. The family left early, apologizing to their host.

TMZ later reported that Michelle had confided in friends about feeling helpless regarding Nick’s mental illness and alleged substance abuse. “We’ve tried everything,” she reportedly said.

Early the next morning, Nick was seen walking alone near a Brentwood gas station. He checked into the Peierside Santa Monica Hotel, appearing “tweaked out” but not visibly injured. Later, hotel staff discovered a shower full of blood and blood on the bed—details that would become part of the investigation.

The Discovery and Aftermath

At around 3 p.m. on December 14th, Romy Reiner, who lived across the street, found her parents’ bodies. She immediately sought help and called 911. The LAPD logged the call at 3:40 p.m. One of Romy’s first calls was to Billy Crystal, a longtime family friend, who rushed to the scene.

Police found Nick six hours later in Exposition Park, miles from the family home. On December 16th, District Attorney Nathan Hawkman announced two counts of first-degree murder against Nick, with special circumstances and a knife allegation. Nick remains held without bail, awaiting medical clearance for transfer.

Hollywood Grieves

The news devastated Barry Marowitz. “I can’t believe they’re not here,” he told Page Six. “I started crying. I want to call him up and say, ‘Hey, buddy.’ Rob was like my family.”

Hollywood’s closest friends—Billy Crystal, Martin Short, Larry David, and others—released a joint statement: “They were a special force together, dynamic, unselfish, and inspiring. We were their friends, and we will miss them forever.”

Jane Fonda, who spent time with Rob and Michelle that Saturday, posted: “I am reeling with grief, stunned. Rob and Michelle Reiner were wonderful, caring, smart, funny, generous people.”

The Reiner family’s official statement asked only for space and privacy.

A Legacy of Love and Unanswered Questions

The Brentwood home, once owned by Norman Lear and Henry Fonda, was a place where generations of Hollywood history lived. Rob and Michelle tried to build their own legacy there, helping a troubled son find his way. Marowitz’s account offers no easy answers. “Maybe that’s the hardest truth about mental illness and addiction. That love can’t always protect the people giving it. That trying everything sometimes still isn’t enough.”

Reconciling the image of a son washing dishes and shooting hoops with the horror that followed defies logic. Family dinners, laughter, and a guest house that felt safe enough for a friend to sleep in—none of it fits with what Romy discovered that Sunday.

Rob Reiner once said, “He’s my son. I love him. It doesn’t matter. He’s more important than anything that could happen to me.” Those words now land with a weight no parent should ever have to bear.
