He went to the back, found the bottle she needed, and set it on the counter. “That’ll be $2.50.”
Mrs. Walsh opened her purse, counting out nickels, dimes, and a few pennies. She counted twice, then looked up, her voice barely a whisper. “I only have forty-seven cents.”

Clyde’s jaw tightened. Duke watched from the side, seeing the shame in his father’s face, the helplessness, the anger at his own poverty. Clyde shook his head gently.
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Walsh. I can’t.”
Mrs. Walsh nodded. She didn’t argue, just closed her purse with hands that trembled even more. “I understand.”
She turned to leave, her shoulders hunched, trying not to cry. The door closed behind her, the bell ringing in the silence. Duke stared at his father, but Clyde couldn’t meet his eyes. He just stood there, looking at the medicine bottle on the counter. $2.50—the difference between life and death for an old woman. But Clyde couldn’t afford to give it away. He climbed the stairs to the second floor, found her door, and set the medicine bottle on the doormat. He pulled out a piece of paper, wrote three words: “From a friend.” He folded the note, placed it under the bottle, and left—down the stairs, out the door, and back home before his father woke up.
At breakfast, Duke said nothing. His father asked him to work after school. Duke said yes, acted normal, like nothing had happened, like he hadn’t just given away two years of savings to save a stranger’s life.

Then, one Wednesday, Mrs. Walsh didn’t come in. Duke noticed, mentioned it to his father. “Haven’t seen Mrs. Walsh this week.”
Clyde looked up. “She passed three days ago. Died in her sleep.”
Duke went still.
“She died peacefully,” Clyde said. “Her daughter said she went to bed and didn’t wake up. Her heart just stopped, but she wasn’t in pain.”
Duke processed this. Mrs. Walsh was dead, but she’d lived three months longer than she would have. Three months because he’d given her that medicine. Three months of life he’d bought with two years of savings.
Her daughter wanted to thank whoever had helped her mother back in December, Clyde continued. “Said someone left medicine at her door with a note from a friend. She’s been asking around. Wants to know who did it.”
Duke’s heart pounded. “Did you tell her?”
“Tell her what? I don’t know who did it. Do you?”
Duke shook his head. “No, sir.”
Two days later, a woman came to the drugstore. Mrs. Walsh’s daughter, Marian, forty-five, looked like her mother—same kind eyes. She approached the counter.
Clyde greeted her. “I’m looking for someone,” Marian said. “Someone who helped my mother last December. Left medicine at her door. Paid for it. Anonymous.”
Clyde remembered the money on the counter, the missing bottle. “I found money and the medicine was gone, but I don’t know who left it.”
Marian pulled out a note—the one Duke had written. She unfolded it, showed it to Clyde. “Does this handwriting look familiar?”
Clyde studied it, shook his head. “Could be anyone.”
Duke was in the back, stocking shelves, listening. His handwriting was on that note. If his father looked close enough, he might recognize it, might figure it out. Duke held his breath, but Clyde didn’t, just handed the note back.
“I’m sorry. I wish I could help.”
Marian nodded, accepted it. She took out another piece of paper, pinned it to the community board by the door. Duke watched. After she left, he walked over, read it.

Three more months of waking up to see the sun.
